The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) headed by Faruk Umar Abubakar(the registrar) has backed out of their progressive mode to the traditional ways of perceived extortion regarding verification fees. This was reflected in a memo yesterday detailing an upward increase in the verification fees.
To start with, verification is a process of reflecting one’s professional stand when you seek foreign registration or processes. Foreign professional organizations often ask to know if you are truly a nurse/midwive. So, they proceed to request the details of your professional stand from your local professional body. This process is done online or offline.
Before the popularity of International exploration of Nigerian nurses and Midwives, this process of verification is done offline where copies of your documents are transmitted by local couriers to international destinations seeking your professional details. At those times, the amount required for verification is less than #27,000. About 4 years ago (2018), the council jacked this fees up to #53, 500 stating the cost of courier service as an excuse.
The picture below is a change.org petition as at that time by a group to protest the unjust increment.
After this time, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (UK) commenced a wider online approach of getting verification document instead of the local courier approach by other countries. This further caused a lot of members to protest the fees for local courier (that NMCN has used as a reason for fees hike) to be reduced to less than #18,000 for UK verifications.
Below is a picture on NMCN website stating the fees for UK verifications
The latest memo that has aggregated the verification to all countries (to be #68875) has come with a question of what justifies the fees to UK since the process is online and there is no courier fees payment by NMCN?
At the moment, the council is yet to respond to clarifications on why the aggregate is just for online and offline transmission.
