Following the OAUTHC event that ensued few days ago, there has been a lot of reactions so far. However, the trail of event as they have taken place over the past couple of days have been detailed below:

You will recollect that the event got publicized with the memo of doctors as contained HERE

The doctors then proceeded on two days warning strike to protest their perception of assault to their profession after the nurse in question mandated the House Officer to clean up the waste that was generated by them in the correct bins.

A message alleged to originate from NANNM OAUTHC unit was seen across social media as:

      Fellow Nigerians,

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, OAUTHC UNIT wishes to voice and express our discontent with the imbroglio involving one of our members and two residents doctors at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Complex, Ile-Ife.

It is surprising to note that the scene which started as a mere altercation between the nursing officer 1 and two doctors after a procedure on a patient degenerated to national issue as Association of Residents Doctors, OAUTH branch takes to the media to threaten a strike action.

It is pertinent for our association NANNM to make a cutting rejoinder with a view to letting the general public have a clear picture of what transpired between health professionals.

The whole scenario started at the Adult Female Orthopedic Ward (AFOW) around 16:00hrs of Thursday, June 16, 2022 when the nurse on duty asked the doctors to pack the sharps used by them during the procedure and the later refused.

The nurse’s action is in line with the WHO standard of healthcare waste management and that of Basel convention on the control of trans-boundary movement of hazardous wastes and their disposal UNEP 1992 which was flouted by the doctors who left the sharps exposed.

It is however disheartening that the ARD did not exhaust all available administrative measures to resolve the issue before going to the media to threaten to embark on a warning strike not minding the consequences of their actions on the health of the innocent citizens.

It will be recalled that when one Doctor Ikokoh Martias physically assaulted a senior nurse officer while attending to a patient in ICU at the OAUTH Ile-Ife on May 19, 2022, the management intervened and the mattered was resolved through internal mechanism. The association still has his apology letter.

NANNM believes that there is more than meets the eye in this matter and wants the appropriate authority to carry out a thorough investigation into politically motivated grievance, those who are determined to destroy our peaceful co-existence in the institution.

      Long Live NANNM
Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria

This was followed by our post here credit to OAUTHC NANNM unit.

Shortly after, NANNM held an emergency congress

This was after the OAUTHC hospital summoned a query into the matter:

      oauthc petition

Similarly, the president of the association of Resident doctors granted an interview on Punch as contained HERE

The president, Nana Fayowole had been quoted to say that it is not the doctor’s job to dispose off wastes generated. Disposal of waste is not part of a doctor’s job description

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives responded to the query through their lawyers as:

A recent interview between the NANNM Chairman in OAUTHC and a radio host shedding more light on the event: click me

On the 27th of June, 2022, follow up stories reportedly have it that Nurses, along with other healthcare professionals in OAUTHC have proceeded on 72 hours warning strike to counteract the leverage of doctors in the misinterpretation and poor understanding of infection control. As of this moment, we are gathering evidences that the strike action is taking place.

      more details later
