With the signing of MoU by the authorities of Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-Ekiti (FETHI) and Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), the assimilation of the FETHI School of Nursing (SON) became a complete success.

Moreover, with the successful resource verification of FUOYE Nursing Department, in which the SON property inherited and the assimilated academic and technical staff were recorded for FUOYE Nursing Dept as at the just concluded verification on 9th February 2022, the Federal University Oye-Ekiti becomes the first Federal University to have successfully implemented this all important policy of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as agreed upon by all stakeholders in a meeting held at the NMCN headquarters Abuja in 2018.

I am particularly delighted that my school – FUOYE is the the 3rd (after Ondo and Benue States Universities) but the first federal university to take this giant stride in implementing the nursing education reform of the NMCN.

Therefore, I am saying authoritatively that the assimilation is what can be called fait accompli.

It has happened, and the entire SON compound of FETHI is now the Clinical school of nursing students of FUOYE in which students will move to and ger accommodated within to complete their 300 to 500L of B.NSc programme. The occupation of the SON compound is agreed to be in phase, pending the time the present diploma students in the school will round up their programme. Fuoye 300 level has been schedule to begin occupation of a part of the building from January, 2023 DV.

The structure within FUOYE campus is for pre-clinical nursing training, and it will continue to house only 100 to 200L of B.NSc programme. It has only one laboratory – Found of Nursing lab to teach 200L students, and the rest 3 labs (for med-surg, MCH and CHN respectively) have already been created in the Clinical Nursing School – the assimilated SON.

At this juncture, on behalf of the entire staff of FUOYE Nursing Department, I express our sincere appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to the principal of the SON and the CMD of FETHI for not only supporting this laudable programme of the NMCN, but to have worked assiduously to make it a reality. It is not everybody in authority that can be that magnanimous…to accept their kingdom cut for the progress of their profession. The patriotism of the CMD and management of FETHI is particularly very surprising, and my University will never forget this kind gesture.

As for me, I remain grateful to God almighty for making me an instrument to make this kind of thing happen again.
From my home based university (LAUTECH Ogbomoso) where I was immediate past Head of Nursing Department, I was called upon to stabilise Nursing Dept of Bayero University Kano. I make bold to say that my present in BUK led to successful accreditation of all nursing regulatory bodies – NUC, NMCN and WAHEB. We also started part time and postgraduate nursing programmes -PGDN, PGDNS, MSc and PhD Nursing.

After accomplishing that, I was called again to Edo State university to do similar thing. And as I finished getting all accreditation of the regulatory bodied, we fought for the creation of a separate faculty – Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. I left the place after servicing as Pioneering Dean of the faculty for a year. Before one could engage in another programme for the university – EDSU, duty call on me again to move to FUOYE to establish a world class nursing Dept. That call, I obeyed.

That I am used to uplift nursing image in another Federal University in Ekiti State is heartwarming indeed.

This is the story so far. I say this much with a strong hope that it will encourage other federal and state universities to do similar thing with the respective schools of nursing in their domain.

Let us know that it is doable. Let’s all jettison the idea of HND thing please, not by condemning it by mere words of mouth, but by working assiduously for BNSc as entry point. Only BNSc certificate as the entry point is the best legacy we can leave behind for our present and incoming generation.

      Thank you all.
